  • How To Prepare Your Car For Scrapping

Compared to selling it to another person in whole or in parts, scrapping a car is one of the simplest ways to get rid of it. An authorized treatment facility like Melton Auto Wreckers will handle most of the process.

This includes:
• picking up the car from your home, workplace, or roadside;
• transporting it safely to our facility for dismantling;
• removing and recovering hydraulic fluids, engine oils, fuel, and so on;
• dismantling and separation of recyclable parts, such as metals; and
• full recycling or disposal of all vehicle parts.

We will also supply you with the appropriate documentation to establish that you are no longer the vehicle’s legal owner, so you can be confident that it is no longer your responsibility.

With that in mind, you can do a few things to prepare your automobile for scrap, both for your advantage and, if feasible, to make our job easier!

Scrap Car

Get your scrap car ready

First and foremost, prepare your scrap automobile for collection, remembering that you will no longer have access to it after we collect it. Instead, check the boot, glove compartment, and cubby holes for valuables, dropped cash and coins, lost keys, and other items.

Remove any documents from the vehicle as well. We will always treat junk cars with care. However, it is preferable not to leave any documentation in the car when it is collected. We don’t mind if you want to remove aftermarket CD players and speaker systems, but if you’re going to keep a significant portion of the vehicle, it may affect the price we can provide you for what’s left.

Get the documents ready

There are a few paperwork issues to address, and not all of them fall under our purview. For example, if you scrap a car with personalised number plates, you cannot transfer that registration number to a new vehicle; therefore, if you have personal plates, apply to transfer the number before scrapping the car.

We can do little if you scrap your automobile with attached personal plates, so please take care of this if necessary! You should also notify your insurer once you are no longer the legal owner of the vehicle, as you may be entitled to a refund of any insurance premiums you have already paid, as well as a reimbursement from the DVLA for any road fund licence (also known as road tax) you paid in advance.
What you should not do while wrecking an automobile

That is a relatively simple way to ensure that your vehicle is ready for pickup with no difficulties and that you receive the best estimate possible. However, there are some things you should not do before scrapping your automobile.

The following are the most important:

Wash the automobile: the vehicle will most likely be stripped and recycled, so there’s no need to keep the paintwork looking beautiful.

Valet the vehicle: There’s a good chance the seats will be torn out and the interior will be deconstructed, so there’s no need to vacuum or dust the interior before it’s collected.

Service the car: If the recovery truck can physically pull the car, there’s no need to worry about its driveability; don’t bother getting it serviced before collection.

Ensure the vehicle: All licensed scrap dealers will have insurance when picking up your car. If it’s already registered as a SORN, don’t add more insurance to trash your automobile.

Do you require assistance?

If you have any questions, please contact us, and we will gladly assist you in understanding how to scrap a car. Finally, remember to:
• Remove valuables and documents
• Transfer personalised plates
• Keep aftermarket add-ons (if desired)
• Inform us of any significant removals
• Reclaim any unused insurance and road fund licences

We can issue you a DVLA Certificate of Destruction once we have confirmed that we have transferred ownership of the vehicle. This officially ends your obligation to buy the car.
